Active listening plays the main role in positive & healthy communication in any business relationship. Active listening courage to build connections, Develop trust, Identify and solve problems, Increase your understanding of various topics, and Avoid missing critical information. This is involved whenever the other person is communicating not just verbally, but listening well, understanding meaning, and responding with good eye contact and body language. Employee who expressing themselves needs more attention from the crowd so that they can express themselves completely. Also, the crowd needs to actively participate with positive body language, showing eagerness to communicate, indicating understanding by at least nodding their head or giving response answers, encouraging others to communicate and being empathic, and showing facial expressions if communication is clear and positive.
Showing that you have heard and understood the information that the speaker has conveyed is an essential part of the communication process. By doing things to keep the communication alive, the speaker is encouraged to communicate well. Nodding your head or using verbal cues such as "uh-huh," "yeah," and "mmm" show the speaker that you are involved in the conversation. Utilizing verbal and nonverbal feedback and paraphrasing what the speaker has said also increases the likelihood of successful communication. (Aithor ,2014) Encourage the speaker: Encouragement from the listener can lead to success. Also listening well reduces misunderstandings & conflicts.
So active listening improves healthy & positive communication. Ultimately, this affects the success of organization’s productivity.
Carl Rogers’ Person-Centered Approach theory
Carl Rogers believed that to grow and achieve their full potential for individuals, they need an environment that provides: (Sinclair, 2024)
- Empathy: A deep, compassionate understanding of another person's feelings and perspective.
- Genuineness (Congruence): Authenticity in communication, where the listener is open and transparent.
- Unconditional Positive Regard: Acceptance and support without judgment.
When these conditions are met, people feel safe to express their opinions & ideas and are more likely to engage in open and honest communication. An active listening strategy ensures the above factors. So according to this theory, active listening builds positive & healthy communication.
